It is an evergreen to semi-evergreen grass with a compact, dwarf habit that grows 3/4 to 1 ft. 'Casca11', sold under the trade name of BEYOND BLUE, was discovered in 2002 by Annemarie Blom of Haarsteeg, The Netherlands as a naturally occurring mutation of Festuca glauca 'Elijah Blue'. Specific epithet means with a white, powdery coating. Festuca glauca Beyond Blue (Blue Fescue) is a compact, mound-forming, semi-evergreen ornamental grass mostly grown for its intense powder blue foliage. Genus name comes from the Latin word meaning a grass stalk or straw. Flowers give way to buffy seed heads which some gardeners find attractive but others find detractive to both the symmetry of the plant and the foliage color. Light green flowers with a purple tinge appear in terminal panicles atop stems rising above the foliage in late spring to early summer, but inflorescences are not very showy. It’s a way of us telling ourselves that we are unlucky and they have a better life and I want that life when all along instead of feeling less successful of what we don’t have, we’d be far better off appreciating what we do have. Foliage forms a dome-shaped, porcupine-like tuft of erect to arching, needle-like blades radiating upward and outward to a height of 6-8" (inflorescences typically bring total clump height to 10-14"). So in reality the grass greener syndrome is an illusion. Evergreen in mild areas, in colder winter regions the leaves should be. ![]() Clumps are easily divided in early spring, and this should be done every 2 to 3 years. Excellent for mass planting, edging, or in the rock garden. At first, the flowers are colored like the foliage before maturing. Densely tufted, the foliage of finely-textured, blade-like needles forms a neat mound topped by upright flower plumes in summer. Festuca glauca, commonly called blue fescue, is a short-lived, low-growing, semi-evergreen, clump-forming ornamental grass noted for its glaucous, finely-textured, blue-gray foliage. This selection forms a dense tuft of bluer-than-blue leaves that remain blue all season. One of the best and most colorful of all Blue Fescue varieties, Festuca glauca 'Elijah Blue' is a wonderful dwarf ornamental grass, mostly grown for its superb, evergreen, bright silver-blue foliage.
